Scientists Find 'Strongest Evidence Yet' of Life on Distant Planet

In a historic scientific breakthrough, astronomers have discovered what they describe as the "strongest evidence yet" of potential life on a distant exoplanet, sparking global excitement and raising new questions about our place in the universe.

The discovery centers around a planet called K2-18b, located approximately 120 light-years away in the constellation Leo. Scientists using data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) say they have detected possible biosignatures, including dimethyl sulfide (DMS) — a chemical typically produced by living organisms on Earth.

Dr. Emily Carson, an astrobiologist at the European Space Agency, stated:

“This is the most compelling signal we’ve seen so far. While we cannot confirm life just yet, the presence of DMS is a huge leap forward in our search.”

The planet K2-18b orbits in the habitable zone of its star, which means temperatures may allow for liquid water — a key ingredient for life. Researchers believe it may have a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a water ocean beneath, similar to early Earth.

Unlike previous discoveries based solely on atmosphere or water presence, this time scientists were able to detect molecular signatures that suggest biological processes — a major milestone in the field of astrobiology.
