Senior Russian General Killed by Car Bomb Near Moscow: Details Emerge

A high-ranking Russian general, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, has been killed in a car bomb explosion just outside of Moscow. The incident occurred in Balashikha, a town east of Moscow, on Friday, April 25, 2025. The Investigative Committee, which handles major crimes in Russia, has launched a murder probe into the attack.

Initial reports indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) was used. The device, packed with metal fragments to maximize harm, detonated as General Moskalik was near the vehicle. The force of the explosion was reported to be equivalent to more than 300 grams of TNT. Security camera footage captured the moment of the blast, showing a powerful explosion that sent debris flying. The Volkswagen Golf that contained the bomb was not registered to General Moskalik, according to the Agentstvo investigative news site.

General Moskalik was the deputy head of the main operational directorate of the military's General Staff. He was a significant figure in the Russian military and had been involved in the "Normandy Format" talks on Ukraine in 2015. Russian President Vladimir Putin had promoted him to Lieutenant General in 2021.

This assassination bears similarities to other attacks on Russian figures connected to the conflict in Ukraine. In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear Defense Troops, was killed by a bomb. Ukrainian intelligence services were suspected in that attack. Other incidents include the car bombing of Darya Dugina in August 2022 and the explosion that killed military correspondent Maxim Fomin in St. Petersburg in April 2023.

The timing of the attack is also noteworthy, as it coincided with a visit to Moscow by U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, to discuss a potential peace plan for Ukraine. The incident raises questions about internal stability within Russia and could further strain relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called the killing a "terrorist attack." Investigators are currently working to determine who was responsible for the bombing. The Kommersant newspaper reported that a second person was also killed in the explosion.

The killing of General Moskalik marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions and adds another layer of complexity to the already fraught geopolitical situation. As the investigation continues, further details are expected to emerge, shedding more light on the circumstances surrounding this deadly attack. We will continue to update this blog  post as more information becomes available.
